"Sculpteur et Sculpture", 1965, aquatint on Japon ancien, 15 1/4" x 11", 387x280mm, signed and numbered XIII/XX in pencil, lower left and right margins.  Printed by Crommelynck, Paris.  Published by Louis Broder, Paris.  From Sable Mouvant.  A superb, clean impression [Bloch 1187; Baer 1156].

Pablo Picasso's (1881-1973) graphic artworks are highlighted by a clearly defined succession of periods, in each of which a certain technique predominates.  The early copper plate etchings and drypoints were followed between 1919-1930 by his occasional lithographs.  The year 1945 marks the inception of his great lithograph works.  In the 1960s, Picasso continued to prepare plates for etchings and took pulls of etchings and aquatints.  But for all the styles and periods that serve as markers for his work, they are in reality only phase displacements of an unchanging creative will.  Graphic art for Picasso seemed to hold a function like that for on other artist in the 20th century:  that of a focal point for all the creative impulses started by historical events, by meetings and personal experiences.

"Sculpteur et Sculpture" is in a 30 1/8" x 35" reverse cove and enlarged abstracted acanthus leaf pattern frame.  The acanthus leaf pattern fillet has a matching roman gold finish.  The hand-wrapped 100% Belgian linen outer and 8-ply charcoal gray rag inner acid and lignin free mats are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO .... $9000.00
