Marc Chagall's (1887-1985) art is an interior art of emotions and feelings which create their own forms of physical reality. Already an established artist, Chagall began print making in 1922 at the age of 33. It wasn't until 1948, while working with the lithographic printer Fernand Mourlot, that Chagall found the lithographic medium ideal for his graphic artwork needs creating more than a thousand color and black and white lithographs during the next 35 years.
Chagall's aesthetic is somewhat whimsical with fairy-tale qualities of fantastic subject matter. His naive-realistic style and unique artistic expression brought to printmaking themes and images recurrent throughout his career. "Elie's Chariot" exemplifies the complexities of Chagall's aesthetic and the sensitive adaptation of his unique interpretation of the biblical allegory.
