"Selbstbildnis", lithograph, 1919, signed and dated 19 in pencil by the artist, from an edition of 175, 13 5/16" x 11 5/16", in very good condition, Klipstein 133B.
Kathe Kollwitz's style moves between naturalism and expressionistic distortion, but her works always reveal a consistent sensitivity to the purely graphic qualities in her media – woodcut, lithography and etching. After 1911 Kollwitz turned away from etching and toward sculpture and lithography. This self-portrait was created shortly after the death of her first son in World War I and captures the sorrow of the greatest of all losses. The powerful image is in part achieved by her use of a heavily textured lithographic stone creating a grainy impression in the image. This self portrait, done in profile, was drawn directly on the litho stone using a litho crayon to create the wide areas of shading that form the head and hair and one strong line to define the profile.
This Kathe Kollwitz is in a 28 1/2" x 34 1/4" faux burl frame with ribbed black inner and outer edges. The silk Oyster colored outer matte and Ash inner acid and lignin free mats are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ....... Sold
