David Hockney (1937 - ) was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He attended the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. A painter, photographer, draughtsman and stage designer, Hockney works are oftentimes quiet, focused on light with tight technique, thus creating an expressionist form of Pop Art. He has a unique and witty realistic style which typically included portraits, still-lifes and images of contemporary lifestyles.
David Hockney is a highly independent artist who has a reputation for creating genuinely original and powerful images that sometimes shock, but never dull the viewer's sensibilities. He has an innate ability to anticipate popular opinion, while always allowing himself to be accepting of leading-edge ideas.
Much of Hockney's work reflects the Southern California lifestyle; swimming pools, undulating bodies and boldly articulated portraitures. He is a superb draftsman, which is clearly apparent in his drawings, print works, illustrations and extended series of prints based upon historical narratives.
