"La Gloire," (1915), color lithograph, 12" x 16," on heavy rice paper, signed in pencil and numbered 96/100 by the artist. Remarque in lower right with the profile of a soldier. A dramatic and compelling work in excellent condition.
Steinlen was a graphic artist and painter who treated his subjects with biting sarcasm. He is the artist who best exemplifies the tradition of political lithography late in the 19th century, providing numerous lithographs for journals in the tradition of Daumier. After his arrival in Paris in 1882 he soon became part of the artistic ambiance of Montmartre. He adopted an asocial point of view and gained his reputation through his graphic derision of the Paris working class and proletariat. His style reflects the influence of both Daumier and Millet. "La Gloire", however, is both sensitive to the tragic victims of war and condemning one of man's greatest folly.
