Jim Dine (b. 1935 - ) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His artistic skills were quickly recognized while still in high school, at which time he began his painting studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Dine then attended the University of Cincinnati, studied at the Boston School of Fine and Applied Arts and the University of Ohio, where he received his BFA degree.
Jim Dine is an artist in the Renaissance tradition and a keen observer of reality reflected by his sensitive and masterful draftsmanship. Dine's prints are made using multiple media and techniques. His plates are created using techniques such as spitbite, softground and drypoint. In addition, he often hand-paints areas of his prints, creating an increased sense of light establishing drama in his works. He utilizes recognized symbols such as the heart, bathrobe and Venus d'Milo to elicit strong emotional responses. Dine's genius was soon recognized and he rose quickly to become the star of the New York art scene. His works were exhibited with those of artists such as Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenburg and Roy Lichtenstein, signaling the arrival of Pop Art. But Dine's works moved into a different realm that was derived from classical art, antiquity and literature with his messages of mortality and humanity.
