"The Clown," (1934) a wood engraving, 12" x 10 1/8," is signed in pencil and annotated "trial proof."  "The Clown" was drawn and the block cut by Isac Friedlander. There was no edition printed.  This is a unique image printed by the artist.

Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Mitau, Latvia. He studied art at the Academy of Rome.  He was befriended by the Russian writer Maxim Gorky and began his print career in 1917.  In 1929 he emigrated to the United States.  A prolific etcher and wood engraver, his work emphasizes the imagery of his native Riga, the urban spectacle of New York during the Depression and the horror of the Holocaust. "The Clown" is both provocative and unsettling in its emotional intensity.

Presented in a 24" x 21 5/8" ebony black museum quality frame with double 100% acid free archival mats and UV glass....$1,500.00
