Alice Geneva Glaiser Kloss (1903-1996), better known as Gene Kloss, was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley, with honors and continued her studies at San Francisco School of Fine Arts. After marrying her poet-husband, Phillips Kloss, she adopted Taos, New Mexico, bringing with her a sixty-pound etching press and proceeded to develop an etching technique whereby acid was applied directly on the plate with fine Japanese brushes or pencils, establishing subtle painted tones, grades of dark, and bright halos of white. Thus, while creating a new manner of American printmaking in Taos, Gene Kloss became the legendary American print maker of the Taos Colony, the Taos school of art.
Gene Kloss focused on clearly portraying her impressions of a remote American geography rich in ancient indigenous cultures. Never concerned with the economic value of art, she etched what she considered important and beautiful. She was recognized with many honors and was exhibited nationally and internationally. She worked from nature and was not affected by the trends or movements of her artistic contemporaries. She was profoundly influenced by the rhythm and balance of those ancient indigenous cultures about her and the natural beauty of the American Southwest. There is a great timeless silence of understanding that pervades her subjects, a stillness that is almost a prayer for all living creatures. What Gene Kloss experienced is now lost to history, but for the majestic impressions upon which she left for us to gaze.
